Disinformation is false or misleading information that is created and spread deliberately, often to cause harm or achieve a political, financial, or strategic goal.

  • Misinformation — false information shared without intent to deceive.
  • Malinformation — genuine information shared to cause harm (e.g. leaks, doxxing).

The umbrella concept of information disorder distinguishes these by intent and truthfulness. Investigators focus on behavior and provenance rather than labeling individual claims true or false in isolation.
